Course Description

The fundamental concepts of data mining practice are illustrated with Insightful Miner. We take you in a very systematic way through the data mining workflow, and show how to perform each step with Insightful Miner.  In interactive sessions, you will use Insightful Miner on data mining case studies. By executing problems with Insightful Miner, you gain confidence and take away the practical knowledge you need to apply the tool in your work.

Course Objectives

Upon completing Data Mining with Insightful Miner, you will know how to do the following:

  • Apply key success factors for data mining projects, and avoid common pitfalls
  • Define the business problem to be solved by means of data mining
  • Identify and collect data to be used for data mining
  • Cross-check and validate data on a business level
  • Transform and aggregate data to be used for data mining
  • Create and select variables with high predictive power
  • Build statistical predictive models using various techniques such as neural networks, decision trees and logistic regression
  • Assess and select predictive models
  • Deploy results in an operational business environment
  • Analyze the impact of the data mining project and learn for the next project

About the Presenter: Peter Shaw holds Bachelors degrees in Physics, and in Earth & Planetary Sciences from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UC San Diego).

Dr. Shaw was a member of the Scientific Staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and subsequently University of Washington, where he has published more than 20 papers on a wide range of data intensive and applied statistical methods.

He is currently a Senior Consultant at Insightful Corporation where he has helped a number of clients across several industries extract valuable knowledge from their data through data mining methods, and has contributed significantly to the Data Mining training course offered by Insightful.
